  • The book describes requirements for the preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication. The Publication Manual was originally published in 1929 as a seven-page standard of procedure.
  • Important changes in the Sixth Edition of Publication Manual are:
  • Number of pages -- The Sixth Ed. contains 167 pages less in comparison with the older Fifth Ed. of the APA's Publication Manual.
  • New Chapter 1 covers ethical aspects of writing for the behavioral and social sciences. The chapter offers new guidance on determining authorship credit; ethics of collaborative authorship; plagiarism, self-plagiarism and multiple publication; rights and responsibilities of research participants; sharing and retention of research data.
  • Chapter 2 presents new section on journal article reporting standards. New section on the use and preparation of electronic supplementary material. Sample Papers demonstrate writing incorporating APA style elements.
  • Chapter 3 has 2 fields with significantly changed content. APA heading style has been simplified to make it more conducive to electronic publication. Guidelines for reducing bias in language have been updated to reflect current practices and preferences. The chapter presents new discussion of historical and interpretive inaccuracies. Examples of good and bad language choices are moved to the web.
  • Chapter 4 now includes guidelines for reporting inferential statistics, which allows to make predictions. Updated table of symbols and abbreviations used in statistics. New discussion of using supplementary information files containing large data sets.
  • Chapter 5 contains significantly updated and expanded information on procedures for graphical and electronic representation of data. New examples of presentation of electrophysiological, radiological, and other data.
  • Chapter 6 presents significantly expanded discussion of electronic sources. The discussion of each reference type is now followed directly by a variety of examples, with electronic sources featured.
  • Chapter 7 contains greatly expanded set of reference examples. New examples have been added for a number of online sources, from data sets and measurement instruments to software and online discussion forums.
  • Chapter 8 is now focused more on the publication process and less on specific APA policies and procedures.
