Benson's Microbiological Applications, Laboratory Manual in General Microbiology (Short Version)
Key differences between 13th and 12th editions
- Period between current and previous publications: 3 years (2014 vs 2011).
- Main changes in the Thirteenth edition of Benson's Microbiological Applications:
- Part 2:
- Ex. 5 "Microbiology of Pond Water - Protists, Algae, and Cyanobacteria" (formerly "Protozoa, Algae and Cyanobacteria") has been updated to reflect changes in the taxonomy of these organisms.
- Ex. 6 is now focused on the diversity and ubiquity of bacteria in the environment and how they are cultured. The morphology of bacterial cells has been moved to Ex. 11.
- Ex. 7 has been updated to reflect changes in taxonomy of molds and yeasts. Discussion on the relationship between fungi that form a mycelium and yeasts.
- Part 4:
- Exs 10-16 on staining reactions have been reorganized and include several new photographs. Each Ex. in the Thirteenth edition has its own set of results and questions.
- Ex. 14 includes new photomicrographs illustrating gram-positive and gram-negative cells. More information on Gram staining method of differentiating bacterial species.
- Part 5: Ex. 19 has new photos of a set of serial dilution plates of a bacterial sample.
- Part 7:
- Ex. 24 includes the discussion of how oxygen influences growth and how it defines various classes of bacteria.
- Ex. 30 includes a description of the human skin flora.
- Ex. 31 incorporates new information about healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. New illustrations of Kirby-Bauer plates showing sensitivity and resistance.
- Part 8:
- Ex. 36 includes new photos of fermentation reactions (Durham tubes), the Methyl Red and Voges-Proskauer test, the citrate test, and the catalase.
- Ex. 37 has new photos of starch, casein, and fat hydrolysis.
- Ex. 38 has new photos for SIM medium showing motility and hydrogen sulfide production.
- Part 11:
- Ex. 51 includes new photos for Gram stain of Staphylococcus, coagulase test, DNase agar with methyl green test, and novobiocin sensitivity of Staphylococcus epidermidis.
- Ex. 52 includes a new photo of Gram stain of Streptococcus.
- Ex. 53 includes new photos of lactose fermenters on McConkey and Eosin methylene blue agar.
- Ex. 54 has two new figures illustrating 2 different categories of epidemics and the concept of herd immunity. Procedure B and its corresponding lab report section illustrate the concept of herd immunity.
- Part 12:
- Ex. 56 has a new photo of the C-reactive protein agglutination test showing positive.
