**Key differences between 4th and 3rd editions**

- Time lapse between current and previous publications: 3 years (2007 vs 2004).
- About 25% of the Exercises are new or revised.
- Each chapter begins with Big Ideas - key concepts necessary to understanding the mathematics and explaining it to others.
- In Analyzing Student Work, one to two examples per chapter of actual student work from the classroom demonstrate how students understand mathematics and further prepare these preservice teachers for their careers.
- Chapter 1 "Mathematical Processes" provides new material on truth tables, statements and their negations, conjunctions, disjunctions, and biconditional statements.
- Chapter 2 "Sets and Whole-Number Operations and Properties" provides new material on the Mayan numeration system.
- Algorithms in Chapter 3 "Estimation and Computation" now connect back to operation meanings in Chapter 2 and a brief discussion of lattice multiplication has been added to Chapter 3.

- Section 13.2 "Solving Equations" contains new information on other ways for solving equations.
